Cal Golden Bears VS Washington State – GetSportsFocus Football 2013

Posted October 7, 2013 by in – Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday threw for a career-high 521 yards and three touchdowns against Cal’s Golden Bears in a 44-22 win. But Cal’s freshman QB Jared Goff also threw for a career-high 489 yards and two touchdowns, 15 yards shy from breaking a Cal single-game passing yards record (503).

Turnovers have hurt Cal this season and their first drive was an example of that problem. The Bears drove the ball down to the Cougars 5-yard line when Daniel Lasco fumbled and Washington State recovered. The Cougars would score their first touchdown on a 35-yard pass from Halliday to Vince Mayle. By halftime Wazzu led Cal 21-15 as Goff and his air raid kept the game close.

Cal receiver Chris Harper caught a career-high 13 receptions and 216 yards, including an 89-yard touchdown that was one-yard shy of Keenan Allen’s school-record (2011) for longest score in Cal history. Injuries proved costly as well, the Golden Bears lost three more defensive players. Head coach Sonny Dykes had this to say about the unusual injury bug that has plagued Berkeley, “Don’t really know what to say about the injuries, never seen anything like it.” The Golden Bears are now 0-2 in Pac-12 play with an ovrerall record of 1-4 and they head to UCLA (4-0) next week.
