LSU advances in the NIT, will play No.1 seed SMU next

In the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament the LSU Tigers defeated the USF Don’s 71-63 at Memorial Stadium in USF.

USF Don’s Senior forward Cole Dickerson finished with a game high 24 points but it was not enough to hold off Jarell Martin, who had a team high 16 points, and the mighty Tigers.

The first half was tough for both teams offensively, USF struggled shooting from beyond the arc, and LSU took sloppy care of the ball in the first half.

Tim Derksen had a good game for the Don’s by consistently attacking the basket and drawing three point opportunities. Besides Dickerson, Derksen was the only USF Don in double figures with 12 points.

LSU’s perimeter defense was key in this game against the Don’s. The Tigers held USF 3-for-23 shooting from beyond the arc. Also the inside presence of junior forward Johnny O’Bryant played a key factor for LSU’s defense. O’Bryant is the only other LSU Tiger with 100 or more blocks in a season. The other LSU tiger with 100 blocks in a season is Shaquille O’Neal.

The LSU tigers will move on to the second round playing SMU after they defeated a tough UC-Irvine team tonight.
