McCaffrey: Rose Bowl Offensive MVP

“I think he was the best player in America before this game, so I think it’s just icing on the cake,” said Stanford’s head coach David Shaw of Offensive MVP, Christian McCaffrey.

Christian McCaffrey proved why his Heisman campaign was so well deserved in his record-breaking performance Friday afternoon at the 102nd Rose Bowl. Number six Stanford dominated number five Iowa in the 45-16 victory.

In the first play of the game, McCaffrey caught a pass from Kevin Hogan and ran it 75 yards to put the Cardinal on the board early. By halftime the sophomore had 248 all-purpose yards, compared to Iowa’s 123 yards of total offense. McCaffrey would go on to break the Rose Bowl record for all-purpose yards with 368. He also became the first player in Rose Bowl history with at least 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving; and finally McCaffrey became Stanford’s single-season rushing leader with 2,109 yards.

McCaffrey would finish the game with 172 rushing yards on 18 carries, 105 receiving yards on 4 receptions and a touchdown, to go along with a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Certainly deserving of the 2016 Rose Bowl Offensive MVP.

Christian McCaffrey had this to say about his team’s performance, “This is an unbelievable feeling for us, for our team, for our community. Couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of a group that’s Rose Bowl champs.”
