NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Cal senior running back Patrick Laird was recognized for his work off the field Tuesday when he was honored by Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association as a nominee for the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®.

Laird announced the Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge last April and has promoted it since with visits to more than 20 schools in the Bay Area and his hometown area of San Luis Obispo with nearly 3,500 students signed up for the challenge. Participants who complete the challenge by August 24 will get an opportunity to meet Laird and receive four complimentary tickets to Cal’s 2018 season-opener September 1 against North Carolina at California Memorial Stadium. Registration and more information about the challenge are available on Laird’s website walkonthenrun.com.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA, and one honorary head coach. The final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September. A special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select the 2018 team.

After the final team members are announced in September, college football fans can visit the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® official page on ESPN.com to view profiles and images of the players and honorary head coach, and vote for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® Captain. Fans are also encouraged to follow along and join in on the conversation by searching and using the #GoodWorksTeam hashtag on their social media channels.

Two former Cal players – Nick Forbes and Jeffrey Coprich – were members of the Allstate Good Works Team® in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
