SJSU Football open up the 2013 season with a 24-0 win over Sac State

Posted August 30, 2013 by in – San Jose State Football is 1-0 to start off the season and ready to take on Stanford across the bay next week. QB David Fales connected with WR Chandler Jones for the first TD of the year in the second quarter followed by a bullet to his other favorite target Noel Grigsby just before the half to extend the lead to 17-0. In the second half, RB Jason Simpson took Fales’ hand off 55 yards to the house putting the game out of reach with the longest run of the game.
But it was the Spartan defense who controlled the game coming up with key stops. LB Keith Smith recorded 18 tackles, CB Bene Benwikere and safety Sean Linton both came up with interceptions.
On special teams, Austin Lopez remains perfect with a 37 yard field goal in the first quarter which gave the Spartans an early 3-0 lead. Perhaps the best play of the game came from Dasheon Frierson who came up with a block on a 46 yard field goal attempt by Sacramento State.
SJSU despite a rocky start on the offensive side of the ball, played very well on defense and special teams. Final score: Sac State 0, SJSU 24.
