PRINCETON, N.J. – Three Stanford freshmen earned tournament titles and seven Cardinal placed overall at the Princeton Open, Sunday, at Jadwin Gymnasium.

True freshman Real Woods and Shane Griffith secured the 141 and 165 pound title, respectively, while redshirt freshman Haydn Maley took home the heavyweight championship for the Cardinal.

In his first collegiate action, Woods went 5-0 in the tournament and shut out No. 14 Nate Limmex of Purdue, 4-0, in the championship at 141 pounds. Griffith was also 5-0 on the day and earned a 2-0 decision over Army’s Brad Laughlin in the 165-pound finals.

Maley was 4-0 on the day and met a familiar foe in the finals at heavyweight – teammate David Showunmi. Maley edged out the win, 8-6, in overtime over Showunmi, who has moved up a weight class this season.

Redshirt sophomore Requir van der Merwe advanced to the finals at 149 pounds, where he finished as the runner-up to 20th-ranked Alfred Bannister of Maryland. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Traxler, who started the season ranked No. 7 at 197 pounds, dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision to No. 10 Patrick Brucki of Princeton in the finals. The returning NCAA qualifier defeated No. 12 Christian Brunner of Purdue, 6-3, in the semifinals.

Junior Gabriel Townsell, who is ranked No. 19 at 125 pounds, took fifth after falling to No. 16 Devin Schroder of Purdue, 4-2, in sudden victory in the quarterfinals. He defeated Lehigh’s Jaret Lane, 9-6, in the fifth-place bout.

In total, 13 Cardinal competed in the Princeton Open, all finishing at least 2-2.

Stanford returns to The Farm next week to play host to San Francisco State in its home opener on Saturday. The Cardinal and Gators will take the dual outside and wrestle at Fan Fest prior to the Stanford-Oregon State football game.
