2012 Bruce Mahoney Game: St. Ignatius vs Sacred Heart Cathedral

The 119th Bruce Mahoney game between the Wildcats of St. Ignatius and the Fighting Irish of Sacred Heart Cathedral was played in front of thousands once again at the historic Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.

With City bragging rights on the line the SI Wildcats pulled off a victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral 35-21.  Wildcats remains unbeaten in league with a 2-0 record, 4-1 overall.  Albert Waters scored two TDs and rushed for 129 yards on 13 carries for the Wildcats.  Elijah Dale ran for 192 yards on 27 carries with a touch down for SI.  Jack Stinn threw two TD passes one to Matt Emery in the first and another to Andrew Vollert in the first half.  Kelvin Sanders came up huge for the Fighting Irish with a 97 yard TD kick off return along with Brett Rasso who score twice for SHC.

Sacred Heart Cathedral would try to snap the two game skid against Valley Christian at their home field Kezar Stadium next while SI travels down to Mtn. View to take on the St. Francis Lancers.

Highlights Breakdown:

First Quarter action
S-I with the ball, QB Jack Stinn is sandwiched… Irish defense Michael Wallace and Nicolas Sison-Gaut gets it done…
But Stinn will make them pay on the next play… dump pass to Matt Emery… so fast we kinda lost him there for a second…THERE HE IS!!!!  Emery with one man to beat… Emery gets away and struts to the end zone with four wildcats escorting him in… 7-0 S-I
Ensuing drive by the Irish… Brett Rasso bust loose up the middle and he is off… 55 yard run, he’s down at about the 11 yard line…
Three plays later, Rasso finishes with… a Touch Down Irish!!!… but the kick was no good… 7-7 tie game
Second Quarter
S-I with the ball following an Emery interception, Stinn hands it off to Elijah Dale and look at Dale with the extra effort…
Next play, Albert Waters punched it in… 14-7 S-I extends the lead…
But they don’t call the guys in green Fighting Irish for nothing… because on the ensuing kick off, Kelvin Sanders is gonna take the ball at about the three… and you know what’s coming… Sanders finds the seam and HE – COULD – GO – ALL – THE – WAY!!!!!!
97 YARDS to the HAAWWWSSSS!!!  Kelvin Sanders fires up the crowd and the Fighting Irish catches up… 14-14
Sacred Heart Cathedral would get the ball back on this interception by Jeremiah Peralta…
and Two plays later, Rasso gets the call and great execution by the Irish Line along with fullback Thomas Wallace who sold the fake well… Rasso jogs 20 yards in to the end zone… 21-14 SHC takes over the lead…
Wildcats answers back… a series of runs by Dale and Waters capped off with this… Stinn… 19 yard to wide open Andrew Vollert… 21-21 Wildcats back in the lead…
Less than two minutes remaining in the first half… Stinn back to pass, in trouble, dodges three Irish, gets away and manages to dump the pass to Dale in the flats… Dale takes off to the sideline with a 35 yard gain and the wild cats will get more because of the late hit…
Wildcats sticking with the game plan and that is to ware-down S-H-C on the outside… Waters on the sweep right, steps out of bounds at the 10..
two plays later, Dale sweeps to the opposide side… Cuts it in and lands on the goal line… touch down Wildcats… 27-21
Third Quarter…
Waters on the run for S-I…. Sweep right but cuts thru across the grain… Waters collects 43 yards on that run… S-I on the move…
And he will finish… three plays later, Waters untouched from five yards out… 35-21 Wildcats extends the lead…
and that will be the final score… St. Ignatius Wildcats, the defending CCS D-3 champions celebrates the win of the first leg of the Bruce Mahoney trophy… Congratulations to the Wildcats, they will play the Lancers of St. Francis next on the road and yes… GetSportsFocus will be there.
