With a 25-2 record coming in to the CCS D-2 title game, the Pioneer Mustangs were looking to solidify themselves as the #1 team in all of Northern California. But, when you’re facing a team with 13 CCS titles in school history, nothing is a sure thing. The Mitty Monarchs proved that Saturday at PAL Stadium in San Jose with a gritty, comeback victory over the Mustangs. After Pioneer scored the first 3 runs of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning and pitcher Holly Azevedo found her rhythm on the mound, the Mustangs started to look like they’d take home the championship. Mitty knew better, though. The Monarchs defended their throne with back-to-back 2-run innings in the 5th and 6th. From then on, freshman phenom Hannah Edwards showed poise beyond her years. She pitched a shutout in relief as the Monarchs held on for a 4-3 victory. That makes 3-straight CCS D-2 titles for the Monarchs and 14 in school history.
