Modesto Christian advances to the CIF Open Semis against Bishop O’Dowd

Posted March 15, 2014 by in – With 1:04 left to play in the CIF Open Division quarterfinal game between Newark Memorial and Modesto Christian, time stopped. The gym lights had just shut off as Newark Memorial led 54-53. After about five minutes, the lights came back on and Crusaders senior guard, Mason Washington turned on a switch.

As the clock ticked down to 20 seconds Washington nailed a corner 3-pointer to give the Sac-Joaquin Section D-3 Champs a 56-54 lead with 13 seconds remaining. Washington finished with a game-high 20 points, 10 points coming in the first quarter.

Opposing senior guard Joey Frenchwood came into the game averaging 21 points the last three games. Frenchwood was held to 14 points but helped lead his Cougars back in the fourth quarter after being behind for almost three periods. Teammate Michael Pickney got hot in the second half, finishing with a team-high 17 points. His solid performance ended by missing 2-of-3 free-throws after Washington’s final 3-pointer.

Not only did Newark Memorial’s 20-game win streak end, it’s 23-8 season did as well. The three-time NCS Division II Champs will lose 9 seniors before next season.

Modesto Christian (24-8) now moves on to face Bishop O’Dowd (26-4) who took advantage of a bye-week. The last time these two teams played was in early February, a 70-52 Dragons win. In last year’s first round of the CIF Open Division playoffs, the Crusaders won 57-42. This should definitely be an interesting rematch.
