MVAL | Moreau Catholic VS Newark Memorial

Posted January 8, 2015 by in – by: Edwin Wise

The Moreau Catholic Mariners went wire to wire against the Newark Memorial Cougars behind a balanced offensive attack and suffocating defense. However, it was the Mariners’ high flying forward, Oscar Frayer, that stole the show.

MC came out the gate strong and quickly showcased its athleticism and skill. Just a minute into the game, guard Terrell Brown set up Frayer for a beautiful “alley-oop” that set the tone and instantly got the capacity home crowd into it.

While the Mariners gained early control, the Cougars would make things interesting late in the second quarter. Aided by a 9-1 run, Newark got to within one point, making the score 34-33 before end of the first half.

But any thoughts of a Cougar comeback were quickly washed away as the second half commenced. A 25-10 third quarter lead by numerous dunks and blocks by Frayer, allowed the Mariners to cruise to a 82-55 victory.

Frayer finished the night with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals. Yet, the Junior small forward wasn’t alone. Brown had 19 points, and Brandon Lawrence added 20 of his own.

Decaurey Brown led all scorers for the Cougars with 17 points.

Up next for Moreau Catholic (7-5, 1-0) will be a home match up against Irvington (4-9, 0-1) this Friday night. As for Newark, (3-8, 0-1) they’ll head back home to host Mission San Jose (2-4, 0-1) on Friday as well.
