GetSportsFocus.com – Paul Fox of Gilroy Wrestling dominated his senior year with a perfect record of 52-0. Ranked number one in the 152 lbs weight class in California, Fox’s match against PJ Klee of Cardinal Newman was probably the most intense match in the final rounds. Scoreless early in the third period, Fox managed to escape taking advantage of Klee’s unsecured grip on his left foot. Then with 18 seconds left Fox who is normally a very aggressive offensive grappler countered a shot by Klee and turned it into two of his own. Klee got an escape right away with less than 10 seconds left and shot for a take down but Fox was more than ready for that last effort. Three years ready to be exact. Fox have been a runner up in the last two CIF State Wrestling championships and he was not about to let this one go. As time ran out, Fox saluted and pointed at his home town crowd of more than 200 people in the stands. At the same time Klee jumped off the mat and ran out of the floor with out shaking Fox’s hand. The crowd booed as Klee disappeared in to the darkness and quickly erupted in cheers when Fox made a breaking motion with his fists as if to say “I broke him…”
This was a story book ending for a young man who spent an extra hour each practice to strengthen his body and perfect his skills. Fox ends his high school wrestling career as a state champion and he is ready to start a new chapter in his life as a Stanford Cardinal.
