Berkeley High boys basketball finally has a banner to hang in their gym, as the Yellow Jackets earned their first Northern California title after a 61-51 win over the Menlo-Atherton Bears on Saturday evening.

Taking over Sleep Train Arena, the home of the Sacramento Kings, Menlo-Atherton kept things close throughout the game, finishing the first half just two behind Berkeley before staying within three after the third quarters. The Yellow Jackets expanded their lead quickly in the fourth, as Niles Malone started things off with a quick three – his third of the game – then followed up with a drive to the basket that drew the and-one to put Berkeley up by nine. Malone finished the game with 18 points, followed closely by Bryan Morris with 17. BJ Malone assisted in that breakaway fourth with eight points in that final quarter.

The Yellow Jackets will continue on to the CIF State Championships – their first ever appearance in the title game. They will take on the Southern California champion Crespi Celts, who beat the Redondo Union Sea Hawks 66-63 on Saturday afternoon. The regional champions will meet for the title game back at Sleep Train Pavilionnext Thursday. Tip off at 8pm.
