Gonzaga escapes the Leavey Center with a last second three point shot by Sam Dower to win over SCU

Posted January 30, 2014 by in – Some pegged this one to be a blown out, instead, we got essentially the polar opposite…a heart-pumping thriller that included several lead changes and an arena that nearly blew its top off every other minute.
Gonzaga had a night to forget shooting wise, as they were only 35% from the field and 27% at halftime. It was increasingly shocking due to the fact that they entered the night second in the country in overall shooting at an impressive 51%.
The Bulldogs had to rely on Sam Dower’s heroics in the final seconds, Gary Bell Jr.’s team-high 15 points (which included three, three’s) and stellar defense, which limited SCU’s top two scorers for the year (Brandon Clark and Jared Brownridge) to a combine 18 points, to pull out its fifth win in a row.
The Broncos have fallen on hard times in the second half of the year as they now have lost five straight.
Santa Clara certainly had their moments, once leading by as many as seven early in the second half. However 13 turnovers and being outscored at the free throw line 17-11, proved too much to overcome.
Broncos (10-13, 3-7 WCC) look to get back on track against Portland this Saturday, while Gonzaga (19-3, 9-1 WCC) takes on USF.
