Patrick Mekari Named To Outland Trophy Watch List

DALLAS – Cal senior offensive tackle Patrick Mekari earned a spot Tuesday on the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy presented by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases the Football Writers Association of America announced. The award is given annually to the nation’s top interior lineman on either side of the football.

Up to seven finalists will be named on Nov. 14 with three finalists selected by Nov. 19. Recently retired offensive lineman and 2006 Outland Trophy winner Joe Thomas will announce the recipient of the 73rd annual Outland Trophy during ESPN’s The Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 6 live from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Werner Enterprises Outland Trophy Awards Dinner produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee on Jan. 9, 2019.

Mekari is one of seven Cal players to have earned spots on preseason watch lists or be recognized as candidates for national awards in 2018 with the others senior tight end Ray Hudson (John Mackey Award Watch List), senior inside linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk (Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Butkus Award®, Lott IMPACT Trophy), senior running back Patrick Laird (Maxwell Award Watch List, Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® Nominee, Doak Walker Award Watch List), junior wide receiver Kanawai Noa (Biletnikoff Award), senior center Addison Ooms (Rimington Trophy) and senior wide receiver Vic Wharton III (Biletnikoff Award).
