STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford tight end Austin Hooper was named to the John Mackey Award preseason watch list and center Graham Shuler appeared on the Rimington Trophy list, as college football’s watch list season continued Wednesday.
The Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee, with the winner announced Dec. 9 and then presented the honor live Dec. 10 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
The Rimington Trophy is presented to the nation’s top center, as selected by the Rimington Trophy Committee. Finalists for the award will be announced Dec. 7 and the winner will be recognized Jan. 16 at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Hooper enters his junior season as one of the top targets for quarterback Kevin Hogan, who was named to the Maxwell Award watch list Tuesday. The 6-4, 250-pound tight end was second on the team with 40 receptions and third with 499 yards while playing all 13 games in 2014. He was named All-Pac-12 second team and Scout Freshman All-America first team after sitting out his first season on The Farm.
Shuler, a senior from Franklin, Tennessee, is on the Rimington Award watch list for the second straight season. He started every game a year ago, helping the offensive line to a No. 18 national ranking in tackles for loss allowed (4.62/game).
Stanford’s season opens Sept. 5 with a 9 a.m. (PT) game at Northwestern on ESPN. The home slate starts a week later against UCF (Sept. 12) at 7:30 p.m. on FOX Sports 1.
