Castro Valley VS San Leandro – GetSportsFocus Football 2013

Posted October 13, 2013 by in – The San Leandro Pirates opened up WACC-Foothill Division play with a 40-20 win over the Castro Valley Trojans on Homecoming night. Even better, this match up was featured on the East Bay Game of the Week.

Both teams came into this game at 1-4 but played tough preseason schedules. Pirates quarterback Stephen Johnson threw a 16-yard touchdown to O’Brien Younger on his first pass of the game. Younger would score again on a 33-yard run and San Leandro was up 13-0 just like that. Stephen Johnson’s second pass of the night was also his second touchdown, finding Keone Foumai in the back of the end zone. Johnson also ran for 65 yards, contributing to a Pirates offense that produced over 300 rushing yards on the night. Ruben Garcia Ceja, Finau Mata’afa, and Ronald Thomas II added three more touchdown runs to help San Leandro score a team-high 40 points.

Castro Valley definitely did not lay down, trailing 21-13 at halftime even with the Pirates defense keying on Trojan playmakers like Demareyeh Lane and Namane Modise. The Trojans got on the board with a 99-yard kickoff return from Modise and a QB sneak from Brenden Brown before the first half ended.

The Trojans (1-5, 0-1) will try to end a five-game losing streak next week as they host Bishop O’Dowd (1-5, 0-1). San Leandro (2-4, 1-0) faces the Hayward Farmers (0-6) next Friday.
