Posted December 22, 2013 by in – Corona del Mar came into the CIF Division III State Championship with a historical feat to accomplish for the school from Newport Beach. The opportunity to go 16-0 and win the first-ever state title for the Sea Kings. Head Coach Scott Meyer and his team did just that, defeating Sacred Heart Prep (13-2) 27-15.

The Sea Kings got off to a fast start as quarterback Luke Napolitano threw two touchdowns and Barrett Barbato intercepted sophomore QB Mason Randall, returning the pick 58 yards for a touchdown to give Corona del Mar a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Sacred Heart Prep would answer in the second quarter with two touchdowns, including a pick-6 of their own. Napolitano’s only completion in this quarter was to Gators linebacker Andrew Robinson who took the interception 37 yards for the score. SHP went into the second half with momentum but three lost fumbles would keep the Gators from scoring for the rest of the game. Ben Burr-Kirven was an all-star on both sides of the ball, rushing for 77 yards and a touchdown while totaling 16 tackles with a forced fumble.
