DLS Tiapepe Vitale scores 4 TDs in the Spartans’ 35-13 win over Pittsburg

Round 2 of the 2012 CIF North Coast Section Playoffs kicked off with the Pittsburg Pirates visiting the De La Salle Spartans, winners of 21 straight games.

Spartan RB Tiapepe Vitale had a monster game, scoring 4 touchdowns and rushing for 141 yards, leading his team to a 35-13 victory. As lopsided as it was, however, the Pirates were only down by seven points (14-7) going into halftime. In fact, Pittsburg should have had the lead 14-17. Following a 38-yard run by Craijon Menefee at the end of the first quarter, the Pirates would have an opportunity for a 34-yard field goal attempt. However, the try would be blocked by #37 David Riopelle, giving the Spartans the ball back at their own 20. Also, the Pirates offense was unable to take advantage of a bad snap on a DLS punt that was thrown into the ground. With a prime opportunity to score at the Spartan 17-yard line, a botched handoff would be recovered by DLS’ Victor Egu, leaving De La Salle with the seven point lead.

The third quarter would open well for the Spartans as Andrew Buckley would catch two Chris Williams passes – one for 12 yards and another for 25 yards to convert on 3rd and 16. This drive would end in a 4-yard touchdown run by Vitale, his third of the night.

Following a failed Pittsburg 4th and 1 conversion, De La Salle would pour it on the following drive. On the first play, Chris Williams would fake the handoff and take it himself on a QB keeper to run it 39 yards for the Spartan’s fourth touchdown of the night.

Despite 115 yards on the ground by Craijon Menefee, the Pirates were only able to score twice – once in the first quarter on a 25-yard run by Menefee and again on a 41-yard pass from QB Lorenzo Renteria to Xavier Crawford late in the fourth period.

Although they allowed a 100-yard rusher, the De La Salle defense was most importantly able to keep the Pirates out of the end zone for the most part. As a result, they will keep the Pirates from advancing in the NCS Division I playoffs. The Spartans will advance to the semifinals and will await the winner between the San Ramon Valley Wolves and the Amador Valley Dons.
