Encinal vs San Leandro – GetSportsFocus Football 2013
GetSportsFocus.com – The San Leandro Pirates (5-4, 4-0) clinched a share of the WACC-Foothill Division title after defeating Encinal 35-14. The Jets (7-2, 3-1) came in allowing only 8 points per game in three league games but tonight was a different story.
Pirates quarterback Stephen Johnson accounted for four total touchdowns, two of those scores were runs that helped San Leandro outscore Encinal 21-0 in the second half. Johnson went 6 for 11 for 133 yards, including two touchdown passes to tight end/wide receiver Keone Foumai in the first half. Foumai was a mismatch for the Jets secondary, catching three balls for 66 yards. After their fourth league win, the Pirates have averaged 42.5 points per game.
Encinal played San Leandro tough all the way up to halftime but lack of depth seemed to effect the outcome. Running back Isaiah Hunter rushed for two touchdowns, including a 13-yard score that gave the Jets a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. But Encinal’s passing game was ineffective as the Pirates defense got to the quarterback four times while totaling three interceptions.
Both San Leandro and Encinal go on the road to finish the regular season next Friday. The Jets will play the Hayward Farmers who are 0-9 (0-4) and the Pirates will face Bishop O’Dowd (3-6, 2-2). Head Coach Brad Bowers has led San Leandro to its first league title since 2009 with tonight’s win on Senior Night.
