Senior Malakai Rango took two kickoffs to the house against Elk Grove Saturday afternoon in front of a big crowd at Brady Family Stadium. The first was an 85-yard TD on the kickoff following a 30-yard field goal. The other was for 95 yards on the second half’s opening kickoff.

Serra’s offensive unit was limited to two drives in the first half, and none in the first quarter at all, largely due to the Thundering Herd’s excellent clock management. QB Luke Bottari completed 11/13 passes for 117 yards, and a touchdown to Terence Loville just before the half. Bottari also ran a 55 yarder to the house late in the third.

Serra’s defense got better as the game went on and won the turnover battle. Junior standout Nate Sanchez led the team with 12 tackles. Jackson Lataimua had 10, Fauese Gaoteote had 9, and Will Mauer had 8. Sanchez scored for the Padres after scooping a fumbled pitch by Elk Grove and returning from it 23 yards out for the TD. Final score: Serra 41, Elk Grove 17.

The Padres improved to 1-1 and will go on the road to wrap up their non-league schedule against a hungry Pittsburg squad (1-2) who lost to Centennial Corona 35-7.
