With only one game left in his high school career, Jeremy Hemsley said “Why not go out with a bang?!” And with a huge bang he did indeed! Hemsley led the Damien Spartans with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists Friday night in the Division III State Championship game against Campolindo.

Start of the first quarter, Damien’s Malik Fitts hit back-to-back three pointers giving the Spartan’s a quick 6-0 lead. But it was senior Chris Hansen who would put Campolindo on the board with easy two pointers and a tip in.

Campolindo hung with the Spartans the first three quarters, only trailing 39-35. Then a fire was lit when off the bench senior Micah Robinson, finishing with 17 points, including five threes, started to hit the outside shot.

Bryce Peters added 12 points and four assists, while Malik Fitts had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans. Campolindo’s Chris Hansen led his team the best he could with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Austin Clarke and Sean Smith combine for 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars.

Damien defeated the Campolindo Cougars 70-57 and took home the Division III State Championship Title.

Participating in the state championship game is a monumental moment for not only the coaches and players but for the fans themselves.

Damien’s student section, “The Pit” definitely gave “The Red C” a run for their money. The students of La Verne, filled three charter buses and a couple vans to travel seven and a half hours to Berkeley to support their classmates. Leaving at 5 a.m. was well worth it especially cheering their team onto victory as they clinched a state championship title.

Congratulations to the Division III State Champions Coach Matt Dunn and the Damien Spartans!
