De La Salle Edges Bellarmine Lacrosse 9-7 During Close Matchup At Home by NICK ROUND

Posted May 1, 2013 by in – De La Salle (9-2) dominated the fourth quarter against Bellarmine (14-5) to break the 5-5 tie on the scoreboard after three quarters of play. The Bells dictated the first half of this game, utilizing ball movement to create long possessions, however they struggled to capitalize on important scoring opportunities.

Great goalie play by Spartan John Perlite kept this game tight and allowed De La Salle to maintain a 2-1 lead through midway of the second quarter. This is when Bellarmine began to make their run, and it all started with Perlite’s counterpart, senior goalie Lawrence Zhou of Bellarmine. With the score 2-1 during the second quarter, Zhou ran the ball down 80% of the field to set up a Tyler Mackin goal off of his assist.

Senior midfielder for De La Salle Will Montero broke the 2-2 tie with a strong hand rip at 6:04 to play in the second, but Bellarmine answered with two goals of their own before half to take a 4-3 lead into the third quarter.

Both squads struggled to separate on the scoreboard during the third quarter, however De La Salle did tie up the game at 5-5. The Spartans then took advantage of this offensive inconsistency at the start of the 4th quarter by scoring two goals within the first 2:25 of play. After carrying the offensive momentum throughout the quarter, De La Salle’s solid defense and clutch saves by Perlite allowed the Spartans to take a 9-7 lead all the way to the end.

The Spartans improve to a 9-2 record on the year, including big wins against Bellarmine and San Ramon Valley. The Bells drop to 14-5 on the year, however their season is far from over, with the much anticipated WCAL championship game left to play that looks to schedule the third matchup of the year between Bellarmine and the Wildcats from Saint Ignatius.
