The Serra Padres remain unbeaten but was challenged big time by the visiting Mitty Monarchs. In front of a sold out homecoming crowd at Brady Family Stadium, Serra fell behind after Mitty ran a trick play to score the first TD of the game. After a 7-7 first quarter, the Monarchs again scored two quick TDs one of which was a forced fumble strip TD by junior Zach Tabangcura. QB Shamir Bey followed it up with a quick strike TD pass to Raymello Murphy who caught the ball up the middle and ran it in for a score to make is 21-7.
Serra regrouped, and score twice before the end of the half thanks to some outstanding plays by QB Daylin McLemore and his WR Terence Loville. Loville made an SC Top 10 like catch in the endzone that caused the Serra side to erupt. “Mr. Reliable” Nate Sanchez would score just before the half as well as in the third to put the Padres up for good. Sanchez also made multiple big plays on defense and special teams to earn him the GSF Game of the Week Playmaker award.
The game-changer happened mid third when Mitty threw a deep pass that was caught by Murphy up the middle. But CB Damon Lewis caught up to the ball carries and punched the ball out and eventually recovered the loose ball for Serra. That let to Serra’s fifth TD by sophomore Hassan Mahasin.
Mitty added a TD with a minute left in the game but failed to recover the onside kick.
McLemore earned himself the GSF Game of the Week MVP completing 17 of 21 passes for 198 yards and a TD. He also had 41 yards rushing and zero turnovers.
Mitty dropped to 4-2, 2-1 while the Padres remain undefeated heading in to another Friday night showdown against St. Francis.
