Modesto Christian defeats Santa Barbara, wins first CIF State title

Posted March 29, 2014 by in – Modesto Christian girls basketball team was on a mission to win and they did it. For the first time in school history, the girls of Modesto Christian Crusaders took home the CIF State title. Four starters scored at least 10 points or more. Lexi Tubbs and Meagan Warwick each had 11 points while Lailoni Gaines and Jasmine Hampton each had 10. Gaines led the defensive effort with 12 total rebounds, 10 of which were on offense.
The Crusaders had their hands full with Santa Barbara sophomore Amber Melgoza who scored game-high 30 points. But the difference was the Crusader’s bench contribution. Candice White matched Gaines’ rebound stats with 12 of her own and was very effective on the defensive end.
Modesto Christian will graduate Tubbs, Hampton and Vivianna Vazquez but the roster is loaded with sophomores and freshmen coming back for a possible Crusader Dynasty in the next few years.
