Serra VS Leigh – GSF Boys Basketball 2014
GetSportsFocus.com – No. 3 seed Serra faced No. 6 Leigh in the opening round of the CCS Open Division playoffs. The Leigh Longhorns came into the playoffs with an impressive 23-2 record while being undefeated (14-0) in the Mount Hamilton league. That did not matter as they played their first WCAL opponent of the year.
The Padres started strong in the first quarter and did not looking back, holding Leigh to just 16 points in the first half. Danny Mahoney set the tone with 10 points in the first two quarters, finishing the game with 15 points. Other players like Cory Cravalho and Jake Killingsworth contributed, combining for 21 points. After being down 2-0 at the beginning of the first period, Serra never lost a lead again due to disciplined and physical defense.
6’6 senior center Jared Williams had a game-high 19 points for Leigh and did most of his work in the paint but it wasn’t enough. The Longhorns’ usually lethal backcourt of Joe Giacchetti and Kyle Morrison were contained most of the night. Leigh came in averaging 64 points a game but were held 43 in the contest, almost 11 points a quarter.
Serra (20-7, 11-3 WCAL) is now 9-3 vs non-league opponents but the next matchup comes against WCAL rival Archbishop Riordan (17-9, 9-5 WCAL) in the CCS Open Division Semifinals.
