St. Ignatius Wildcats take the Bruce Mahoney Trophy back
GetSportsFocus.com – The Wildcats took down the Fighting Irish for the Bruce Mahoney Trophy for the 47th time since 1945. Albert Waters led the scoring with 12 points for SI followed by Matt Brown with 11.
Both teams played excellent defense in the first half of the game. Herman Pratt IV made two key blocks which prevented the Wildcats from scoring inside. But it was the Wildcats’ perimeter shooting which gave them a 27-20 lead at the half. Waters, Brown and Daniel MacLean-Vernic bombed threes for SI giving them plenty of momentum which spilled over to the second half.
SI was strong, fast and fearless with Dunbar orchestrating the offensive attack. Sacred Heart Cathedral played tough but it was the execution that made the difference. SI executed while SHC had trouble handling the ball.
With about 5,000 basketball fans packed inside the War Memorial Gymnasium, St. Ignatius pulled away midway in the fourth quarter and never looked back, securing a 56-46 win over their arch rival.
