WCAL – Mitty wins league opener against Bellarmine

GetSportsFocus.com – Aaron Gordon lead Mitty with 28 points.  Monarchs wins WCAL opener against Bellarmine.  Bellarmine was led by senior Grant Vermeer who scored 18 points for the Bells.

Highlights Breakdown:

WCAL home opener for Bellarmine hosting Archbishop Mitty.  First half, Bellarmiine’s game plan: NO BIG GORDON DUNKS and they did well by triple teaming Aaron Gordon.  However Gordon still managed to score 16 in the first half.

Bellarmine, they’re ballers too, Nate Thomas nice inside move… 6-5 Bells down late in the first…
Mitty building a nice lead, Brandon Farrell gets the rebound and puts it back in… 8-5
Bells hanging in there… Blarin Mendy, top of the key jumper… 14-12 Bells down by only 2
Closing seconds of he first quarter, Gordon goes to the hoop… they’re really on him, still gets it to go before the buzzer… 16-12 Mitty
Second Quarter, Bells quick to answer… our first look at Grant Vermeer, nice inside lay up…
And how about another one… Vermeer to the hoop once again, draws the foul a three point play gives the Bells a 17-16 lead
Bellarmine playing good defense… Isaac Gayles with the steal… gets it to Vermeer for the fast finish… 21-18 Bells extends the lead…
MItty closes in… Brandon Abajelo for three… 23-21 Monarchs now down by 2
2:40 left in the first half… Bells on the go, Gayles baseline lay up… 29-24 Bells
Mitty would get it together, back to back lay up by Ferrell will give the Monarchs back the lead…  Ferrell getting it done for Mitty with 17 points
Half time score… 30-29 Mitty
Second half action, 37-37 tie, Mitty defense steps it up… Connor Petersen intercepts the pass gets to Gordon, Gordon gives it up for Matt McAndrews for the finish… 39-37 Mitty
With 1:45 left in the third, Gayles… watch the steal or should I say grab by the Bells senior… takes it right out of Gordon’s hands and he’ll take it all the way for the lay up… 45-37 Bells with the lead…
Fourth Quarter, Mitty with the game tied at 59-59, Abajelo burries the three giving Mitty a 62-59 lead
And with less than 2 minutes left in the game, McAndrews gets the rebound and goes on a break, 65-63 Mitty wins it…
Aaron Gordon who scored 28 points for Mitty.
Grant Vermeer led Bellarmine with 18 points.
