August 2022

The Serra Padres have their most challenging schedule this season, and the proper preparation is critical. Patrick Walsh is entering his 22nd year as the head football coach for the Padres, and he’s put together the best coaching staff to execute a winning formula thru Love, Brotherhood, and Humility.

The Track Test is a tradition at Serra that puts the mental toughness of the team and individual players to the test. It has since replaced the pre-season scrimmage that 99% of high school football teams in America participate in before the official start of the season, at Serra, since the 2019 season. That’s right, Serra forgoes the “scrimmage” every season since then, and they have gone to the CIF State Finals two out of the last three years, plus an undefeated 5-0 season in the Spring of 2021. They’ve won 29 games and lost four since then.

This year, senior WR Jayden Weber became Serra’s “Track Test King” and the 2nd all-time great performer of the challenge. Weber and his senior group, along with some young veterans, are ready to take Padre Football to the elite level. The journey starts this Friday, August 26th, at Folsom High.

August 2022

It’s not often that we get to sit down with a high-level young individual like 17-year-old Jurrion Dickey. He is a 5-Star National Recruit committed to Oregon Football, and he loves his Mom, family, and the City of East Palo Alto where he is from. Jurrion publicly acknowledged earlier this Summer that he is transferring out of Valley Christian High School, the school he played for the last three years. During his time at VCHS, Dickey made a name for himself as one of the best up-and-coming prospects in the area and eventually in the state.

Perhaps his participation in off-season 7v7 activities was the thing that catapulted him into the national spotlight. His viral moment at the first RVC National Showcase in Oakland, CA, where he ran to his mom, after making a game-winning catch in the semis of the tournament, up in the stands, literally sprinting across the field and up in the bleachers, earned him some significant air time on Good Morning America, Kelly Clarkson Show, ESPN, and more. He’s had a few other viral moments, a consistent event that seems to focus the attention right back on him.

Jurrion Dickey is the most well-known high school recruit in the world simply because of his personality and the way he positively grabs attention.

This interview talks about his life as a young man navigating thru all the unexpected national spotlight that comes from just being a “DAWG.”  He will play college football after his senior year, but more importantly, Jurrion will live life the way he wants to.

Alexander Atkins is probably the most experienced player on the Serra Padres’ roster. Now a senior, Atkins was moved up to varsity as a freshman. He’s been in the CIF State Championship twice and was part of the undefeated 5-0 team in the “Covid Spring Football Season” of 2021.

Atkins took part in this Summer’s GSF Top Dawg Camp Series and was voted by the coaches as the “Most Outstanding Upper Classman” athlete. He also performed well during the testing period of the camp, finishing in the top five of the Shuttle, Vertical, Broad Jump, and taking first in the 3-Cone Drill.

Atkins is a well-rounded athlete who can play any skill position, especially QB. He came from a football family and has been around Serra Football since junior high, acting as a water boy for his older brother’s games at Serra. Atkins is looking to lead his team to another memorable season.

Serra will open up the season on the road at Folsom on August 26th, followed by another game up North against De La Salle, which will be televised on ESPN.

The Cahoon / Knapp Era at St. Francis has officially got underway Friday afternoon. Best friends since the age of 5, Jackson Cahoon and Aaron Knapp’s St. Francis Lancers debut was a memorable one. Cahoon led the defense with 14 total tackles while Aaron orchestrated the run game and completed four passes for 51 yards. The Lancers’ freshman team beat De La Salle 21-7 and to cap off the night, the varsity ended a 30-year-old streak by beating the Spartans 31-28 in front of a sold-out crowd.

Four years ago, that same varsity team beat De La Salle as freshman. And if history repeats itself, Cahoon and Knapp have something very special to look forward to but surely, their goals are a lot bigger than just beating one team.

November 2, 2021 – Sophomore Joseph Bey has turned into a defensive specialist for the Serra Padres. The experience of being a freshman varsity player is paying off for Coach Walsh and his staff. It was a smart move, to say the least. Bey, in his second season with the Padres, has definitely shown tremendous growth along the way. He is one of the best free safeties in the league with one of the “others”, is his teammate, senior Malakai Hoeft.

Serra’s secondary is one of the best in NorCal with seven interceptions and multiple forced fumbles and pass breakups. Bey leads the Padre’s DB squad with 35 total tackles, behind fellow sophomore Jabari Mann’s 49. Mann is Serra’s hard-hitting MLB. Bey and Mann along with Danny Niu and Collin Tahitua, all played varsity in the five-game Spring 2021 season. All four got plenty of action and mentorship from the Padre’s senior leadership.

With the regular season wrapping up, Bey’s role will be key in defending St. Francis’ speedy running back JuJu Teu and wide receivers Tim Netane and Andrew Adkison. Serra doesn’t give up a lot of points and Bey is the insurance policy that sits back deep to make sure no one advances the ball or scores past him.

Saturday afternoon will be a great showdown of talent between the Serra Padres and the St. Francis Lancers. The regular-season finale features two undefeated teams with one winner for the coveted West Catholic Athletic League championship. Kick-off time is at 2:30pm at the Brady Family Stadium in San Meteo on the campus of Serra High School.

July 4, 2021 – Serra Football’s future is bright with talents coming in and out of a program that has experienced some successes in recent years. Despite the 2020-2021 season being delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Padres overcame and gifted their long-time coach of 20 years an undefeated season. Head football coach Patrick Walsh, the man responsible for igniting the movement to bring back high school and youth athletics back in California, was the inspiration, and the motivation, that kept Serra firing on all cylinders this past season. Serra was led by a group of seniors that took the underclassmen, including four freshmen, under their wings to fight and sacrifice for each other, an act of love and brotherhood that is the foundation of the program. Joseph Bey, was one of those underclassmen, a freshman and a young budding leader on the defense who caught two major universities’ attention so far, Arizona State and Pittsburgh. Bey started and played a considerable amount of time on defense and special teams. And with the 2021 Fall season fast approaching, the offseason grind just got more intense for “the future” of Padre football.

Player Bio

Serra freshman Joseph Bey is a fierce competitor who is always willing to put in the work and strives to always be a leader.

He is the middle child out of 3 boys. His older brother is a freshman at CSM, and his younger brother is in 6th grade.

Bey started playing football at the age of 5 for the Redwood City 49ers, and competed for the Pop Warner National Championship twice. He was one of our freshmen who played varsity football at Serra in the Spring of 2021. Bey played a key role in the Padres’ defense and special teams. He started a couple of games and improved tremendously throughout the season while maintaining a 3.5+ GPA. His academic efforts landed him a spot on Serra High School’s principal’s list as a freshman.

March 18, 2021 – GSF Weekly Blog
Before we dive into the delayed 2020 football season, we need to talk about the best player in the CCS and perhaps the Bay Area, coming back. We’re talking about Serra High’s junior Hassan Mahasin aka “The Missil3”, with the #3, his original number from his youth football days.
“The Missil3” got plenty of action from the backfield as a sophomore and his playmaking ability was a huge addition to Coach Patrick Walsh’s offense who’s stacked with a handful of senior D-1 national recruits: Daylin McLemore(ASU), Jackson Lataimua(WSU), Nate Azzopardi(Idaho), Terence Loville(SJSU), Christian Pedersen(Louisville). Mahasin racked up over 1,000 all-purpose yards as a running back, slot receiver, and returner to go along with his seven total touchdowns. He played all fifteen games and was utilized all year to make important plays. His biggest run of the year came on a fourth and a long one situation in the CIF D1-A NorCal finals against San Joaquin Memorial early in the fourth quarter. After picking up a first down, Serra scored three short plays later to extend the lead 28-18 and went on to advance to the State game the following week. Mahasin was counted on a few times during the regular season including the St. Francis game where he sealed the game when he picked up the first down on a fourth and long situation that would’ve turned the ball over on downs for the opposing team to have a game-winning drive.
With the start of his junior season being delayed by almost six months, Mahasin took no days off from getting bigger, stronger, and faster despite the pandemic lockdown. According to his coaches, “The Missil3” 3.0 version has been upgraded to a bigger, faster, and stronger model with 20+ pounds of added muscle. Look for Mahasin to set the tone early in this Friday’s season opener on the road against Valley Christian. The kick-off time is at 6:30pm.

Sophomore Season (Fall 2019)
– Mahasin Stats: 15 GP • 7 Total TD • 545 Total YDS
52 CAR • 374 YDS // 25 REC • 171 YDS
– 2019 WCAL Champion
– 2019 CIF NorCal D1A Champion
– 2019 CIF D1A State Finalist

Someone to watch out for is Serra’s RB Hassan Mahasin. He’s quick, fast and seems to fit in the Padres’ stacked offense. He’s only a sophomore but he handled himself well against Pittsburg with two touchdowns to start the season. Expect big things from his young playmaker. WATCH THE HIGHLIGHTS!!!

One week after their season-opening game against Pittsburg High was canceled due to the Caldor and Dixie Fires in Northern California, the Serra Padres unloaded on the Palo Alto Vikings. All the pent-up energy and frustration reflected the scoreboard with four minutes left in the first half. QB Dominique Lampkin with his star-studded offense scored on every single possession on the ground and in the air five total times. It would’ve been six but with a little over two minutes left in the half, with the ball just outside the 10-yard line, head football coach Patrick Walsh ordered his field general to genuflect twice to drain the game clock into halftime.

The Vikings’ offense had trouble weathering the “Padre Blizzard” in the first half. They finally got a first down with 1:06 left in the first quarter. A series of sacks and TFLs starting Soane Siolo, KC Clark, Danny Niu, Sam Goligoski, and Andrew Stewart followed right after.

After sophomore Jabari Mann scored the Padres’ first TD of the season on a screen pass from Lampkin, 3-star national recruit Hassan “The Missil3” Mahasin followed it up with three of his own including a long bomb from Lampkin from midfield that put Serra up 35-0.

Lampkin opened up the second quarter with an electrifying 60-yard TD run down the left side, a “touchdown run he’s longed for since freshman season” according to “The Missil3”.

But perhaps the biggest play of the night, that really set the tone for Serra was the pick-6 by senior CB Sione Laulea. That interception return did not just give Serra a 21-0 lead, it sent a message to the rest of their opponents to beware of the Padres’ secondary.

Dominique Lampkin’s high school football career is like a movie. We’ve all heard the saying “luck, is when opportunity meets preparedness” right? Well, that means Lampkin is one lucky guy and he does wear the number 7 too.

Serra was on a roll and has dominated their first seven games in 2019 with a roster full of future college players. Senior QB Daylin McLemore, a 3-star rated gunslinger was on pace to becoming the “Player of the Year” based on his performance leading the Padres to an undefeated run at that time. But a collarbone injury against Sacred Heart Cathedral in week #8 shifted the trajectory of the season and that is when then-sophomore Dominique stepped into the starting role and showed everyone that he’s ready for the moment. In fact, he was more than ready. Lampkin scored two touchdowns right from the get-go against Sacred Heart and helped lead the Padres’ offense all the way to the CIF Division 1-A State Championship. Along the way, he showed he belonged in the conversation of being an elite QB by beating Valley Christian twice, the second being for the CCS Open Division title and a loaded San Joaquin Memorial team for the NorCal championship. In the WCAL’s season finale, Serra was losing to St. Ignatius 14-7 with less than two minutes left in regulation, when Lampkin led his squad on a 14-play, 96-yard TD drive. The Padres then failed to score on the two-point conversion losing the game and ended up splitting the WCAL title with SI and Valley Christian.

Prior to the 2020-2021 football season which was delayed all the way well into the Spring of 2021 because of Covid-19, Lampkin received his first two offers, one from Fresno State and the other from Illinois State.

The Padres opened up the season against Valley Christian. Lampkin threw four touchdown passes in the game. And thanks to the offensive line, the 3-star national recruit, pilled up 14 touchdowns in five games and helped lead the Padres into an undefeated season.

“I never took time off, I kept working,” Lampkin stated.

It also helped to have the Bay Area’s number one defense and the number one player in Hassan “The Missil3” Mahasin, Lampkin’s long-time close friend and teammate.

This Fall of 2021 is Dominique Lampkin’s last season as a Padre. If you think his sophomore and junior seasons’ roster was loaded, well think again. There are at least 13+ future college players on the 2021 Serra Padres and about 7 of them are going to be on Dominique’s side of the ball. The growth that took place from his freshman year to his sophomore year prepared him to take advantage of the opportunity when it presented itself in week 8 of the 2019 season.

The hard work he put in the offseason and the grind he kept up during the delayed period of his junior season helped him lead his team into an undefeated, 5-0 record. And with two days left before the first game of his senior campaign, Lampkin’s luck is looking good. Three years of preparation is about to pay off this Friday when he’s given the opportunity to lead his Padres against the best opponent on their schedule.

Serra High School’s football program has consistently produced scholarships and next-level athletes over the past few years and it is ramping up. The most recent product that came right out of Tom Brady’s alma mater is 6’5″, 230lb TE Christian Pedersen. He is one of the few athletes we followed from sophomore year up until he crossed the stage on graduation day. Christian’s progression from an athlete with some potential to one of the nation’s best was impressive to watch thanks to some behind-the-scenes work done by a team of people. Football recruiting is a business and if you make the right decisions with the right people, you will see progress and success. The decision for him to transition from wide receiver to tight end was key but what’s even more important was trusting the process. Trusting the advice of his coaches to go all-in on becoming a real football player by committing to a workout regiment that resulted in him becoming a next-level athlete made him a major asset that colleges wanted. The Covid-19 pandemic affected the entire world including the college recruiting scene here in the US. Only the essential businesses were allowed to conduct business. As the world shut down for business, Christian’s recruiting stayed open. The work he put in from freshman season to junior season became a valuable asset that eventually landed him his first scholarship from San Diego State on March 11th of 2020, two days after the official shut down of the country happened. That offer sparked an avalanche of inquiries from other programs looking for next-level talents. While the majority of the world was dealing with not-so-good things, Pedersen’s recruiting racked up 23+ offers from March to May. Other than the essential businesses like the health care and food industries, only a handful of other industries stayed open and even flourished during the pandemic like the financial industry. The main reason was demand and positioning. Call it luck or whatever but the investment Christian made along with his circle of supporters two years prior to the pandemic proved to be the game-changer. He was like Amazon and Door-Dash and everyone saw his value and wanted it. With this fall season’s active roster, Serra has at least twelve high-potential next-level talents so far. Seven of them already got offers from major colleges including sophomores Danny Niu, Joseph Bey, and Jabari Mann, and three seniors Nate Elu, Drew Azzopardi, Dominique Lampkin, and Hassan “The Missil3” Mahasin. Juniors Ryan Silver, Seamus Gilmartin, and seniors Kai Hoeft, Andrew Stewart, and Sione Laulea will most likely land their first and multiple offers in the next few weeks. There are a handful of players that will most likely make noise this fall as well like Ryan Mahe and Patelo GI just to name a couple. Both started this past spring and made major contributions to the undefeated, 5-0 squad. In 2019, Serra promoted five players to play D1 football, Nate Azzopardi at Idaho, Daylin McLemore at Arizona State, Jackson Lataimua at Washington State, Terence Loville at San Jose State, and Nusi Malani at Virginia. There were a handful of other players that were overlooked and are currently playing at the College of San Mateo including Nate Sanchez, who was probably the best all-around player from that team. Five football players signing on National Letter of Intent Day was the most for Coach Patrick Walsh at that time. That number will most likely be outdone come February of 2022 but who’s counting right.
