Full game recap of the Saint Francis Lancers vs San Benito Hayballers season opener. This game was a wild one with both teams who played their hearts out.
One noticeable thing about this game is the number of players on both teams. San Benito showed up with two busses full of players, 63 total. Saint Francis suited up 59.
Lancers’ defense had trouble early stopping San Benito’s offense. A couple of big plays courtesy of Primo Reyes who ran a 60+ yard TD and Chris Soto, who caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from Michael McShane kept them in the game. St. Francis kept it basic with the run game. Camillo Arquette led the first scoring drive with a TD followed by a Lawrence Azzopardi punch right up the middle in the second. SF led 14-12 at the half.
The SF defense finally got things under control in the third led by Arquette. They made two key stops while San Benito was going for the end zone. Arquette made one of his standout defensive plays in the red zone forcing a Haybaler field goal try. That was quickly shut down by defensive tackle Antonio Vakameilalo who came up with a huge block that led to a TD the other way after Anay Nagarajan scooped it up for a “94-yard” scoop and score.
St. Francis special teams kicker was really the difference-maker with five-star kicker Matthew Karic making all his kicks including a late third field goal that gave St. Francis a 24-12 lead heading in the fourth.
San Benito did score another TD in the fourth and found themselves in a situation to go for a game-winning drive with less than a minute left but Camillo Arquette came up with another stop on fourth and long to seal the victory for the Lancers. Arquette would end up being named the GSF Weekly MVP with his all-around performance.
