Bellarmine shocks Folsom to win the CIF NorCal D1-AA title 42-35 ending a 43 Bulldog home win streak.
The Bells trailed early but a pass from QB Troy Martig to Vincent Fernandez aka V-Nasty, up the middle evened out the score. Folsom got the ball back and looked as if it was about to score but Jacob Bergstrom took away a pass around the 30-yard line where they capitalized right away. Martig threw a 70-yard bomb to speedster Kyle McCauley to give the Bells their first lead of the game, 14-7 at the half.
To start the second half, Bellarmine added one more and gave Fernandez his second score of the game. That extended the lead 21-7.
Folsom answered back with ease, QB Jake Jeffries hit Eric Davis for a long ball that ended up at the two. Jeffries ran it in for the score a couple of plays later. They followed that up early in the fourth with another scoring drive. Jeffries airmails it 34 yards to Tre Green to tie the game at 21-21.
Bellamrine answered with a nine-yard Jackson Burrill TD but on the ensuing kickoff, the Bulldogs got a 96-yard kick return for a touchdown from Davis to keep it tied up at 28-28.
Fast forward with less than 3 minutes left in the game, BCP down by a touchdown now, Antonio Garcia ran it in for the Bells from 15 yards out for the equalizer.
With 50 seconds left, Folsom was in a position to win the game but Jeffries’ pass intended for Davis was highjacked by Fernandez who then took the ball 50 yards the other way. Bellarmine gave the ball to Garcia for the dagger two plays later ending the Bulldogs’ 43 game win streak at home. The final score was 42-35. Bellarmine won the CIF NorCal D1-AA championship in dramatic fashion advancing to their third trip to the CIF State Championship.
