Two undefeated WCAL teams squared off Saturday afternoon in San Mateo in front of a packed crowd. The Serra Padres hosted the Bellarmine Bells in a highly anticipated game with the loser who could possibly be kicked out of the league title race.
The Padre defense, with their star-studded roster, has only given up two late scores with their backups against Palo Alto in their season opener. Their offense has scored over 35 points per game as well.
Bellarmine have played well and brought with them a 4-0 record with the Padres being their first big test of the season.
The first half of the game was mostly the Bells against the Padre defense because offensively, Serra did not have any problems scoring right away in each of their possessions.
Bellarmine was outmatched by Serra across the board. Sophomore LB Jabari Mann expected a game with “a lot of turnovers and TFLs” and he was right on point. The Padres defense forced at least 5 turnovers and did not let up at all.
Bellarmine finally scored their first TD against Serra since 2017 with back QB Nate Escalada perfect dime to his wideout Ramy Nijmeh. “Perfect” was what the Bells needed to play with against the Padres but their performance was far from it defensively and offensively.
Despite the big win and dominant performance, Coach Walsh’s squad was in no mood to celebrate because they lost a big part of their team in Hassan “The Missil3” Mahasin. The 4-star national recruit suffered a serious leg injury that sidelined him the rest of the game after a short run up the middle in the early third quarter. Mahasin was diagnosed on the spot by the team’s on-site physician with a possible torn ACL. His dad informed GetSportsFocus producers that “The Missil3” will be undergoing an MRI Monday morning.
The way Serra has performed, the only other team that can possibly compete against them are the Lancers of St. Francis. That game is set for Saturday, November 5th, as both team’s regular-season finale.
