Two weeks ago, the M-A Bears was a team that needed to prove themselves again, but that changed a couple of days later. Head football coach Chris Saunders suddenly got the “#1 high school player in the nation,” according to GSF producer ALF Joaquin, which turned the team into a title contender.

When the Bears hosted the Bellarmine Bells for their season opener Saturday, that statement sounded foolish in the beginning as M-A got dominated 20-0 in the first quarter. Jurrion Dickey was not a factor since the line couldn’t stop the Bell’s defense. But two big plays changed that.

Sherrod Smith intercepted a Bellarmine pass midfield which led to a 50-yard Jurrion Dickey touchdown down the right side, which was the beginning of the end for BCP.

M-A outscored Bellarmine 41-7 after being down 20-0. Jurrion Dickey, the 5-Star Oregon Commit who transferred to his home city to play his last year of high school football, finished with four touchdowns and over 200 all-purpose yards. This was a statement win for Menlo-Atherton, and it should shake up all the rankings this weekend.

Bellarmine looked prepared, but they might have some players out of position. Ben Pfaff was the best player they have, and it might have been a good match-up had he covered Dickey instead of junior Parker Threatt, who is also a QB. Parker did score a 60+ yard TD when he took a hitch pass from Nate Escalada. He can pretty much play any skill position, but it might be worth it to invest in Threatt now as a QB.  Final score, 48-34
