Serra’s second-half surge overwhelmed the Half Moon Bay Cougars into a 47-7 win Saturday afternoon. After a 12 play, 80 yard drive that lasted over half the opening quarter, Half Moon Bay fell apart but kept fighting until the end despite the beating it took on offense and defense. Speaking of defense, Serra spent the majority of the first three quarters trying to tame the Cougars’ and it took a while because Half Moon Bay took every single second off the play clock before running each play.

Half Moon Bay survived the first half trailing by only a touchdown but turnovers in the third combined with Serra’s big yardage plays was just too much for the team with less than 30 players suited up.

Hassan “The Missil3” Mahasin scored the second touchdown of the game for the Padres that put them up for good. He also caught a next-level pass from QB Dominique Lampkin, a 55-yard bomb that got the crowd going with less than three minutes left in the third. With a 40-7 lead heading into the fourth, the mercy rule was enforced but Serra’s bottom of the fire punctuated the win with one more touchdown by sophomore Jaden Green. Lampkin led the offense with two passing and two rushing touchdowns.

Half Moon Bay will play Los Gatos next and the game against Serra should prepare them well. Unlike their 2019 CCS first-round match-up against the Padres, the Cougars only crossed the goal line once. But their toughness should carry them thru the rest of the season and don’t be surprised if they upset a Los Gatos or an M-A team along the way.

Serra will take on Mitty after their bye week and it will be an afternoon game at “the inferno”, the term used by Monarchs’ senior Dominic Boccabella. The Padres are looking to suit up their full squad with multiple players coming back from their injured reserve list.
